My patient doesn’t speak English. What are my options for translation?

1) Virtual Interpreter (aka, Rolling I-Pad, Bob Junior, Robob)

  • Very high usage, especially during COVID times since patients do not have family members or friends present to interpret!
  • As mentioned before, there is no guarantee that we will have the device permanently.
  • Use the AUDIO option unless you feel that video will help (eg. hearing impairment)
    • The video option costs roughly twice as much
  • Please try to put back into head nurses office after use
    • If we lose it, we probably won’t get a replacement

2) Phone Apps – Google Translate / SayHi

  • For brief communications, a phone app can be very helpful
  • Both Google Translate and SayHi are good options
    • Google Translate has a nice option of listening for both languages when spoken
    • Play around with them to see which one you like better
